Today, 6/14/2012, Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.71%, up from 3.67% last week. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 2.98%, up from 2.94% last week. A year ago the 30 year rate was 4.50%. You had to wonder when things would turn around. Rates could not continue to drop forever. The question is, is this just a temporary upswing, or are we in for an extended period of gradual increases? We will just have to wait and see.
Freddie Mac's Vice-President/Chief Economist said, "Fixed mortgage rates edged up slightly from record lows during a mild week of economic data releases. The Federal Reserve Board reported that household net worth rose by $2 trillion to $62.9 trillion over the first three months of 2012 primarily due to increases in stock markets. However, this is still well below the peak of $67.5 trillion set in the third quarter of 2007. Nonetheless, homeowners saw an aggregate $372 billion rise in property values over the first three months of this year."
Do keep in mind that we are a very large country, So figures that come out for the entire nation, may have little or no relevance for your particular area. In the end, it is best if you speak with a local REALTOR or financing expert to see what the situation is for your part of the United States. Florida is not Michigan, nor is Maine the same as California. Market conditions can be very different from place-to-place. Also, your own credit history, the property you want to buy, etc. will effect your specific loan options and interest rates. Your mortgage broker or bank loan officer can give you more specific information.
