Property Tax News from Pasco County, Florida - Understanding Your 2008 Proposed Taxes

Mikewells At our weekly meeting today Mike Wells, our Pasco County Property Appraiser, came by to give us an update. Prices have dropped in the county and the appraisers office is very aware of this fact. Pasco County is quite diverse with many areas being very rural and others being extremely suburban. We also have a high percentage of retiree owners which makes us unique compared to many other parts of the country.

As many of you know, in our county and around the State of Florida property tax reforms were put into effect due to a special election in January 2008. Though it appears that the reforms will NOT reduce our taxes as much as we would like, it is important that all property owners understand how things will work so that they can be sure they are not over paying.

In the middle of August we will get our Truth in Millage (TRIM) notices. These will explain what taxes will be if no budget changes are made, what they will be if changes are made, etc. It can be confusing to say the least, in even a normal year. This year it may be even more so due to the changes in the laws.

Keep in mind that there will be ANOTHER proposal for a constitutional amendment on this November 2008's ballot to change the financing of education from being dependent on property taxes to an increase in our sales taxes here. Who knows what that will do to everything.

To help you understand what will be happening THIS year, before the November elections, Mr. Wells' office has prepared an informational sheet that should be helpful. I am placing a copy on this site and you can download your own copy by clicking on the following link: Download elwell_2008_prop_tax_explanation.pdf  If you still have some questions, you can contact the appraiser's offices at any of the following numbers:
