Well, Tropical Storm Fay has come and gone. It was weird the way it came over Key West and then right up the middle of the state until it almost got to Tampa. Then it took a jag to the east and went up the east coast touching Daytona and Jacksonville. Now is headed for Georgia and Alabama. You can click on the image to the left to see the path of the storm a little better.
Here in Zephyrhills, just north of Tampa, Florida, you would never even know that a tropical storm was in the vicinity. Skies were gray since Monday, but just a few light showers here and there, and one 10 minute downpour. Winds were hardly more than those of weak thunderstorm. I heard of no damage or flooding whatsoever around here.
It is my understanding that those areas that had the storm pass directly over them were a bit damper, many getting several inches of rain. But that seemed to sum up the major effect of Fay. A lot of rain in some places and some flooding in low-lying areas, which happens even in a severe regular thunderstorm. Sustained winds never seemed to get into the hurricane force range.
So, all-in-all, not much of a worry at all. In fact, the storm brought much needed rain to many parched areas of the south which in turn diminishes the threat of wide-spread brush fires.
Much of my information comes from the National Hurricane Center. They follow tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes from birth to death. It can be a useful site to visit. If you would like to try it out, click on the following link: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov I suggest you "bookmark it" or "make it a Favorite" for future reference if you live in an area that can be affected by tropical storms or hurricanes. You will find it interesting and helpful.
